Important and extensive photographic collection of approx. 2800 original photographs and approx. 1600 picture postcards, table and menu cards, as well as geographical maps and brochures from the estate of Albert Steche. 1898-1914. 64 vols. DB 117652776 . - This extensive and photographically impressive collection documents the extensive expeditions and journeys around the world undertaken by the entrepreneur and politician Albert Steche by ship and on land. Of particular importance are his journeys to Africa and North and South America, some of which he undertook together with well-known personalities from the military (General von Rotenhahn, Lieutenant Teuffel von Birkensee), politics and administration (District Administrator von Miquel) and well-known entrepreneurs (Curt Thorer). In addition to the expedition destinations, the volumes contain numerous photographic and lithographic panoramas of Cairo, Dar-Es-Salamm, Nairobi and impressive amateur photographs of local indigenous populations, tribal cultures, railroads, architecture, etc. His trip to Africa and South America is additionally documented by a transcript of a 407-page travel manuscript (Africa) and a 13-page typescript. Stops included Barbados, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. The albums also contain travels through Egypt, Jerusalem, Constantinople, the Mediterranean, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Dalmatia (with panoramas of Split, Fort Lorenzo and Dubrovnik), Spain, Malta, Greece and Switzerland, including numerous photographic panoramas of the Alps and Norway (North Cape), etc. In addition, extensive travels through Germany. Among other things, early photographs of beach life at the Baltic seaside resort of Zinnowitz, which are almost impossible to find, stand out. Steche was a German chemist with a doctorate, entrepreneur and politician (National Liberal Party) as well as an important figure in the Esperanto movement. From 1920 to 1925, he was chairman of the German Esperanto Association. From 1887, he worked as a chemist and partner in the Leipzig company Heine & Co. The company achieved global significance with its essential oils and fragrances.
