In 1914, French artist Victor Tardieu, despite his advanced age, volunteered to serve in the French army. He joined the American Field Service, a volunteer ambulance unit based in Bourbourg. Although he had no official role as an artist in this unit, Tardieu produced an abundance of oil paintings capturing life in the field hospital. Many of these works were donated to the Duchess of Sutherland, who was then working with the Bourbourg Red Cross. These precious works were then bequeathed to the Florence Nightingale Museum, a London institution dedicated to the history of nursing through the ages. In this particular composition, General Eydoux (1852 - 1918) is depicted from behind, engaged in a compassionate discussion with wounded soldiers. Tardieu's art manages to humanize the soldier by depicting him leaning over, sharing affectionate moments with the wounded. This painting captures a moment of tranquility in the midst of the turmoil of the First World War. The work is dedicated to General Eydoux, with these respectful words: "Au Général Eydoux, hommage respectueux, Bourbourg".
