Studied medicine in Neuchâtel, Berlin and Würzburg and was awarded a doctorate in 1860. He founded the anti-alcohol asylum in Pontareuse. He was director of Préfargier (psychiatry) from 1872 to 1882. From 1889 he taught hygiene at the Neuchâtel girls' college and physiology and anatomy at the University of Neuchâtel, where he was rector from 1911 to 1913.
