A Doctor of Letters, he taught at the Ecole Normale and the Sorbonne before devoting himself to writing. He began by writing plays, then moved on to novels. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. Living in Switzerland, he supported the French Communist Party. Autograph letter signed to a friend Villeneuve, 21.10.1923: "Je vous retourne, corrigé, le cahier 9 des Précurseurs ...". Included: Typed letter signed and dated 30.01.1948.
