The author, Fausto Andrelini, was born in Forli in Romagna in the mid-15th century and died in Paris in 1518. A Latin poet by trade, he was crowned in Rome at the age of twenty-two for his poems entitled Amours. He moved to Paris in 1488, where he taught ancient literature and belles-lettres, and received the title of poet to the king and queen (Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne). His Latin poems enjoyed great renown in his day. The actions of the Most Reverend Father in God, Monseigneur le Legat, are a poem: A la louenge du tresnoble legat George damboyse de paix mediator And of Rouen archbishop and prelate Second guardian in France Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, legate of the Holy See and prime minister of Louis XII, managed without raising taxes, and carried out major reforms, taking measures against venality in office and putting finances in order. He believed he could succeed Pope Alexander VI, but was deceived by Cardinal de La Rovère, who was elected in his place. Brunet dates the first edition of this poem to around 1509. We believe it was published around 1508, the first translation by Jean Divry dating from May 20, 1508. The second edition of the translation, which we present here, is undated and must have been published in 1508 or 1509. It does not contain the Latin text, but is, according to Brunet, rarer than the first. Jean Divry, born in Heliencourt in the Beauvaisis region around 1472, was a physician, poet and translator of the works of his time. The arms of Cardinal d'Amboise are printed on the last leaf. A finely bound copy by Trautz-Bauzonnet. Provenance: Count Raoul de Lignerolles (sale label II, 5-17)
