A professor at the Stasbourg History Faculty and then at the Sorbonne, he wrote two important works: La Cité Antique (1964), in which he showed the role of religious beliefs in the constitution of the family and Greek and Roman society, and Histoire des Institutions de l'Ancienne France (1875-1892). Autograph letter signed 7 mars à un ami :"...de venir dîner avec nous le jeudi 15 mars, à 7 heures du soir ...".
