HISTORY - DOUMERGUE Gaston (1863 - 1937) - Autograph letter signed

He joined the government as Minister for the Colonies from 1895 to 1909. He was Minister for Trade, Labour and Industry and also for Public Education. He led a mission to Russia in 1917 and was elected to the Senate after the First World War. He was elected President of the Republic in 1924 and retired from public life at the end of his term in 1931. President Lebrun recalled him in 1934; he initially refused, but was later persuaded to form a multi-party government, but was forced to resign at the end of the year. Autograph letter signed dated Tournefeuille, 15.03.1935 to Robert de Saint-Jean: "On vous a dit vrai, je me suis toujours refusé à publier souvenirs ou mémoires…"; envelope.
