Alfred de Vigny, Cinq-Mars, ou Une conjuration sous Louis XIII. Paris, Urbain Canel, [Imprimerie de H. Balzac,] 1827. 2 volumes in-8, 304p & 368p. Third edition, revised and corrected. Edition of 1000 copies. In a letter to his cousin, the vicomtesse du Plessis, Vigny wrote: "I first met him [Balzac] as a printer; and as such he sent me the proofs of the second edition of Cinq-Mars. He was a very dirty young man, very thin, very talkative, getting confused in everything he said, and foaming as he spoke because all his upper teeth were missing from his too-wet mouth". Brown half-chagrin, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets, marbled edges. Joints weakened, bottom of spine of volume 1 torn off and reattached, paper slightly yellowed, practically free of foxing, bottom of volume 2 missing. A good copy. (Tranchida, 164).
