Description

In-8, [4]-IV-553-[1]p. Two-column printing, illustrated with a portrait of Molière on the title and 30 engraved bands at the head of each play. Urbain Canel edition from the Rignoux press, preceded by the unsigned Vie de Molière, written by Honoré de Balzac. Interesting provenance: Imprimerie de Balzac, offered by its distant successor Charles Peignot (1897-1983) to writer Henry Poulaille (1896-1980) on November 5, 1954, with this dedication: "To Henry Poulaille, his grandson on rue Visconti, this dedication made in Racine's study, this book printed by Balzac. [signature], 5. 11. 54" Contemporary half glazed green calf with small corners, spine richly decorated with 4 faux-nerfs of gilt filets, with gilt roulettes and fleurons. Paper slightly yellowed. After Balzac's bankruptcy in 1828, Madame de Berny was obliged to settle the debts incurred by Balzac's unfortunate management; she brought her son into the new type foundry Laurent, Balzac, et Barbier, which flourished under the management of Alexandre de Berny (1809-1881). With his adopted son, Charles Tuleu, whom he instructed in the techniques of type design, engraving and foundry, Alexandre de Berny ran the business masterfully. In 1921, Tuleu was succeeded by Girard, and the type foundry became Girard et Cie until 1923, when the Deberny et Peignot company was created, which lasted until 1970. (Vicaire, V, 917; Carteret, III, 163; Lacroix, 406; Vicaire and Hanotaux, La Jeunesse de Balzac. Balzac Imprimeur, p. 336). A good copy with an attractive provenance.
