In 1890, Émile Testard completed his edition of Les Chouans with another 13-page portfolio containing 8 etchings by Julien Le Blant, engraved by Émile Boilvin and prefaced by Jules Simon, politician and member of the Académie française. "We know that M. Testard recently published a refined edition of Balzac's Les Chouans. Today, he completes it with a remarkable preface by Mr. Jules Simon, who challenges the strange assertion that Balzac, a profound psychologist, is "a novelist without style", and with eight plates out of text, important compositions by M. Le Blant, engraved by Boilvin. The painter of the Chouannerie was at ease here, giving career to his picturesque, colorful and lively talent. All in all, a bibliophile's delight."
