First edition of this collection of short stories, illustrated with 212 plates (including the complete frontispiece), almost all by Gavarni (4 plates by Bertall) and 800 woodcut vignettes in the text. It contains two texts by Balzac, Physiologie du Mariage [titled Philosophie] and 10 chapters of Petites misères de la vie conjugale. These chapters are entitled: Ce qui disparaît de Paris; Histoire et Physiologie des boulevards de Paris; Les petits métiers de Paris; Un espion à Paris; Une marchande à la toilette; Un Gaudissart de la rue Richelieu. Vintage red half-chagrin, percaline boards, ribbed spine, fillets and fleurons, gilt edges, one board faded, some rare foxing. A good copy.
