Description

Honoré de Balzac, Le livre mystique. Paris, Werdet, January 15, 1836. 2 volumes in-8, [4]-XVI-360p & 377-[1bl]-[1]p. Second edition, shortly after the original. Put on sale on December 28, 1835, the original edition quickly sold out, and on January 5, 1836, a new treaty with Werdet provided for this edition, entirely recomposed (the collation changed) and with variants in all the texts. On January 18, Balzac wrote to Madame Hanska: "I would like you to have the 2nd edition of Le Livre mystique, where I have made some changes". In addition, Séraphita was published in a separate edition of 300 copies. The book seems to have gone on sale after the date on the title page. It was not even announced until March 18 in the Gazette de France. Slightly posterior full paper bradel boards, untrimmed, with scattered foxing. Paper breaking at the spine and missing. Uncommon.
