Description

Honoré de Balzac, La Mode, revue des Modes, galeries des Moeurs, Album des salons. Paris, [revue de la mode], 1829-1830. 4 volumes in-8, approx. 300p per volume. First four volumes of this revue, bound in quarters, from October 1829 to September 1830. Volume I is marked second edition. The work is illustrated with 81 plates, often enhanced in color, and scores are interspersed throughout the volumes. Balzac contributed 13 articles to the journal, published between January 23 and June 26, 1830, all of which appear in volumes II and III. These include "De la souveraineté et de la servitude des femmes en France" (January 23), a fragment from Physiologie du mariage, and "Moeurs parisiennes - L'usurier" (March 6), a fragment from Dangers de l'inconduite. Not all are signed by Balzac, but sometimes B or H or without signature. Some signed "le comte Alex... de ..." had been wrongly attributed to Balzac. Please refer to Roland Chollet's book, Balzac journaliste, le tournant de 1830. Provenance: Pierre-Georges Castex (with his bookplate); sale Anne-Marie Meininger (Tajan, March 15, 2007, no. 118). Bound in pastiche, blue half-maroquin, decorated spine, gilt head, wide margins (little trimmed). Spines faded, jaws often split at ends (especially volume 1), jaws of volume 2 partly restored (one entirely). A good copy.
