IN THE STYLE OF GUO XI (CA. 1001 - CA. 1090) China, Yuan to Ming dynasty 23,7 x 23 cm Mountain Landscape with Travelers. Round Fan, Mounted as Album Leaf, ink and light colors on silk. Signature by the artist: “Guo Xi from Heyang”. One seal of the artist. Three collectors’ seals: “Yuan shi …” etc., no more discernible. On the outside of the passepartout is a seal of the former collector of the album: “Seal of the collection of the Guanfu Studio” (Guanfuzhai shoucang zhi yin). Old and important European private collection, assembled before 1930 and between 1950 and 1980 Guo Xi was the foremost master of landscape painting at the Song court at the time of emperor Shenzong (r. 1067-1085). His most famous work ‘Early Spring in the Mountains” is now kept in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It depicts a high towering mountain with valleys, waterfalls and rivers on both sides and tiny travelers crossing this overwhelming scenery of nature. The composition of this fan painting reminds one of such landscapes by this great master. The very finely drawn travelers with carriages drawn by oxen are typical for landscapes of the Song dynasty. But the texture strokes of the rocks are not the characteristic ones of Guo Xi, they are more in the manner of Li Tang (ca. 1070-1150), a court painter of the Southern Song dynasty. No doubt this fine painting of high quality is in the tradition of these great Song masters, but is probably of later execution, presumable in the Yuan or in the early Ming dynasty
