ACHAEMENID BRONZE DECORATED PHIALE

Ca. 600 - 400 BC. An ancient bronze phiale with a unique texture. The vessel can be characterised as a 'mesomphalic' phiale due to the circular knob in the centre. Two decorative bands feature lotus flowers and almond-shaped patterns. These bowls were used in ceremonies for pouring liquids as offerings or for symbolic purification. Size: 55mm x 90mm; Weight: 430g Provenance: Private UK collection; formerly in the collection of Mr. R. Unger; previously with a London gallery; acquired in the 1980s on the UK art market.
