Description

ALFA-ROMEO MONTREAL This styling exercise was presented at the 1967 World's Fair in the eponymous city of Montreal. It was based on the chassis of the Giulia Bertone coupé and equipped with the same 4-cylinder, twin-shaft (bi albero) engine. Alfa-Roméo was so impressed by the car's attractive appearance that it decided to produce a production version. To achieve this, Marcello Gandini, then at Bertone, had to modify the design slightly, increasing the height to accommodate a larger engine. With a ready-made sporty powertrain in the box, the engineers installed the famous V8 of the 33 racing car, increasing its displacement to 2.5 l to boost torque. The main features of this engine are 200 horsepower, 4 overhead camshafts, Spica mechanical fuel injection, electronic ignition and dry sump. The gearbox features 5 gears, with the 1st staggered. Produced and delivered from the end of 1970 until 1977 for the last models, this figure may seem modest, at around 3,900 units. It should be put into perspective, however, as it was not sold in the USA, as it was not available with an automatic gearbox, and was up against a well-known and long-established rival: the Porsche 911! The model shown was launched in August 1973. It runs perfectly. It's in near-perfect condition. The odometer shows 82,000 km. It sports a handsome livery, with black seats and bright red carpets to match the bodywork.
