Description

Limited edition of 230 copies on Vélin Rivoli numbered from I to XXX, and 31 to 230 (here no. III). The first XXX numbered in Roman include an intaglio engraving of the Tissandier brothers' portrait "aux ballons" (drawn on the original copper matrix by Auguste Boulard fils (1852-1927), in the publisher's workshop, on the Vincent Moreau hand press of Zaugg Frères by René Lefèvre) + a reproduction of the original Nadar plate used as a model for this engraving + 6 additional two-color plates from the original drawings by Albert Tissandier. In addition, a few suites of the photographs in the text, printed on glossy paper, will be offered to the first subscribers while stocks last. The book contains 30 chapters spread over 126 printed pages with sepia-toned titles and illustrated with 50 engravings + 33 documents and letters reproduced in their entirety and in their original format by Henri Beraldi, Max de Nansouty, Aymar Arlot de Saint-Saud, including 13 superb letters from Count Henry Russell-Killough, 22 photos reproduced from contemporary snapshots taken at the time of the articles, and 23 pencil drawings by Albert Tissandier taken from life during the various excursions featured in this book, reproduced full-page out-of-text in bichromy and varnish on an almond mottled background with a handwritten caption. Texts and engravings are brought together here for the first time in book form. Documents, letters, photos and drawings have never been exhibited before. With subscription form and printed correspondence from the publisher. Publisher's binding in ½ olive calf with filleted corners (Benoît Dressayre), ribbed spine, gilt irons, title and fillets, cold-stamped picks on boards, gilt head. In a protective slipcase. This binding was offered to purchasers of the first 30 copies, whose owners will request it. One hundred years ago, Albert-Charles TISSANDIER (1839-1906) died in Jurançon. Although he published several scientific and technical works, as well as important travel accounts, Albert Tissandier remained totally unknown in Pyrenean circles throughout his life. The reason for this is that none of his writings - published in book form - concerned the Pyrenees, even though they were the main focus of his investigations when he wasn't among the Sioux, in the clouds, in the Australian bush or on the summit of Fuji-Yama. So it was time to pay tribute to this charming man, pioneer of the air, reckless traveler and mountain runner. To this end, we have gathered together all Albert TISSANDIER's press articles relating to "excursions", which are essentially directed towards the mountains, and more particularly the Pyrenees. The size of the original drawings dictated the format of the book, which is folio-sized. The facsimiles of the letters have been preserved in their original size. The photographs and almost all the documents come directly from the archives of Albert and Gaston TISSANDIER. In addition to the fifty engravings that harmoniously complement the texts, there are twenty-three large, superb drawings presented on an almond background. The author, who died a hundred years ago, had thousands of readers, including Henry RUSSELL, a newly discovered illustration that served as a model for Charles Jouas, impressed Alphonse MEILLON and won the admiration of Henri BERALDI.
