The Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine on marble, Flemish, circa 1620 Oil on marble. Exquisitely painted depiction of the mystical marriage of St. Catherine of Alexandria and Christ. The Mother of God is enthroned on a three-tiered pedestal, gently holding the half-lying child on her lap. St. Catherine, dressed in a magnificently embroidered skirt with a lavish cloak, turns to him from the right. The Child Jesus will place the golden ring on her head as a sign of her consecrated virginity. The marble background, reminiscent of the masses of clouds, is decorated in places with remnants of putti heads; two putti with Catherine's attributes, the crown and a palm branch, hover above the group of figures in the sky. In a contemporary wooden profile frame painted with vine motifs (retouched, slightly rubbed). Hanging loop on the reverse. Overall dimensions 67 x 59 cm. Condition: II +
