Description

A large Greek bronze kalpis, 4th century B.C.. Metallic bronze with blue-green patina. Bulbous body, on a small, protruding base. Two lateral handles, a further handle below the neck. The rim decorated with beads and egg-and-dart ornaments. Minor replacements on the sides and bottom. Excellently preserved, well-proportioned kalpis, a special type of the hydria, with beautiful green patina. Height 41.5 cm, diameter of body 31.5 cm (without handles). Provenance: Frankfurt private collection. Acquired in April 2016 from Hermann Historica (auction 72, lot 4555). Previously privately owned in Potsdam, acquired in the 1980s. Condition: II
