Description
A French glaive de l'École de Mars, 1794 Double-edged blade with a light medial ridge. Two-piece brass hilt with straight quillons, each with a depiction of a Jacobin cap on the center guard, two iron guard plates with brass finials and brass knucklebow. Scaled grip with flat oval pommel, riveted pommel damaged. Length 69 cm. The École de Mars was founded on June 1, 1794 (13 prairial an II) and the first cadets were accepted. However, the revolutionary government feared that the cadets might become a kind of Praetorian Guard for Robespierre and closed the École de Mars again without further ado on 23 October 1794 (2 brumaire an III).
