Description

Eugène-Antoine Aizelin (1821 Paris - 1902 ibid.) "Nymphe de Diane". Original title Bronze, brown patina. Signed and titled; foundry inscription "F. Barbedienne Fondeur" and round stamp "Réduction Mécanique A. Collas Brevete" (in capitals). Fully sculpted, finely executed depiction of the goddess of the hunt as a graceful half-nude with a shouldered bow and quiver of arrows, leading a dog on a lead with her right hand. Aizelin studied under Augustin-Alexandre Dumont and regularly attended the Paris Salon from 1852-1897, where he also exhibited the original model for the "Nymphe de Diane" in 1885 (no. 3276), in 1867 Aizelin became a Knight of the Legion of Honor, in 1889 he won a gold medal at the World Exhibition. H. 57 cm. Brown patinated bronze. Signed and titled. Cast by Barbedienne, Paris (inscribed "F. Barbedienne Fondeur"), circular mark "Réduction Mécanique A. Collas Brevete".
