Description

French or Italian sculptor (active in the 19th century) "Borghese Fencer" ("Borghese Gladiator") Bronze, dark patina; gray-green, lightly veined marble plinth. Much reduced bronze sculpture based on the life-size Hellenistic marble sculpture from the 1st century BC; this was discovered during excavations at the beginning of the 17th century, restored in 1611 and became part of the Borghese collection in the Villa Borghese in Rome in 1613. It remained there until 1807, when it was acquired by Napoleon Bonaparte for the Louvre in Paris, where it remains today. From the 17th century onwards, it became one of the most admired and copied sculptures of antiquity; King Charles I of England had a bronze cast made in the original size (now in Windsor Castle), and numerous other casts for famous castles and parks followed. Height 47.5 cm. French or Italian sculptor active 19th C.; Dark patinated bronze of the "Borghese Gladiator" on grey green marble base.
