Description

Albrecht Dürer (1471 Nuremberg - 1528 ibid.) "Joachim's sacrifice is rejected by the priest". Original title Woodcut/paper, around 1590, monogrammed at the bottom center of the cane on a palette; sheet 2 (of 20) from Dürer's series "Das Marienleben". Condition d (after Meder, edition without text) with watermark double eagle with flower (Meder watermark 222). Wvz. Hollstein 189, Bartsch 77, Meder 189 d, Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 167. Trimmed to the framing line. 29.5 cm x 21 cm. Frame. The present woodcut is considered one of the last compositions Dürer created before his departure for Italy and depicts the prologue to Dürer's Life of Mary. Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna, were still childless after 20 years of marriage and therefore offered sacrifices in the temple in Jerusalem three times a year on the main feasts. On the feast of the consecration of the temple, Joachim again approaches the altar, but his offering is harshly rejected by the high priest. See: R. Schoch, M. Mende and A.
