The present woodcut is considered one of the last compositions Dürer created before his departure for Italy and depicts the prologue to Dürer's Life of Mary. Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna, were still childless after 20 years of marriage and therefore offered sacrifices in the temple in Jerusalem three times a year on the main feasts. On the feast of the consecration of the temple, Joachim again approaches the altar, but his offering is harshly rejected by the high priest. See: R. Schoch, M. Mende and A.
