Albrecht Dürer (1471 Nuremberg - 1528 ibid.) "Christ in Limbo". Original title Woodcut/paper, mounted on Japan, 1510. monogr. and dat. in the woodblock. 1510, sheet 11 of the "Great Passion" from the Augsburg edition (without text) of 1675 by J. Koppmayer. Condition c (of d) after Meder with watermark Augsburg coat of arms with two M (Meder watermark 178). Wvz. Bartsch 14, Meder 121 c. Trimmed to the framing line. 39.6 cm x 28.2 cm. Frame. After his death, Christ descends into the forecourt (limbo) of hell to free the poor souls who were condemned to suffer in hell as a result of the Fall. The gates of hell have been blown open and Christ kneels before the shaft-like entrance to hell to grasp the outstretched arms of the sufferers, while numerous hell monsters mock him and point a spear at him. On the right behind the Son of God, Adam and Eve, with the cross as a sign of redemption and the apple as a sign of the Fall, lead the group of the already redeemed.
