Meissen figure "Cavalier with Pug" A young gentleman in a purple jacket over a white shirt, black knee breeches and cape sitting on a raised rock base covered with sculptural flowers and leaves. With his raised right hand training the male pug sitting at the side. Polychrome painting with gold contouring. Probably designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler and Peter Reinicke. Minimally restored; h. 12.5 cm. In the 18th century, the pug became the symbolic figure of the so-called Order of the Pug, a Masonic society with Roman Catholic members, which came into being as a result of the ban on Freemasonry by Pope Clement XII.
