FRANCE. Royal Guard sergeant's halberd reused after 1792, wrought-iron axe head with strong median ridge, axe head with a sun in high relief in the center on both sides, framed on the right by an "L" cut out of the corbin beak, on the left by a pair of crossed pikes topped by a Phrygian cap, all mounted on a round socket with long splints, the signature of the forger L. Gounod can be seen. Later wooden shaft. L.: 52 cm, with splints: 83 cm, total L.: 2 m 53. 18th century. ABE Several examples of this Royal Guard halberd are known (see PETITOT sale, November 22, 1989, no. 332, M. Blondieau), this one was reused during the Revolution, probably for the National Guard.
