Description

COIFFURES. Senior firefighter officer's helmet entirely in brass, gilded with mercury, "à la minerve" bomb surmounted by a crest with wings adorned with 6 gadroons and a cornucopia, "oursin" (bear fur) caterpillar, mask adorned with a grenade, faceplate featuring a crest with crossed axes and a flamed grenade, surmounted by the rooster, surrounded by oak and laurel leaves and a banner stamped "sapeurs pompiers" on the left and left blank on the right, the whole emblazoned on a cluster of 8 flags, movable visor adorned with crossed axes and laurel leaf garlands lined with morocco, screw-in plume holder with right tricolor plume and stamped tulip (H: 27 cm), gilded brass chinstraps embossed with guilloche-edged scales lined with black velvet and fastened with a gilded cord, inner basane cap fastened with a lace (incomplete). July Monarchy period. TBE (wear to the gilding of the bomb, one crest screw missing) The richness of its decorations and the absence of a town on the plate banner suggest that this was the helmet of a colonel in charge of an area comprising several towns.
