Description

EQUIPMENT. Rare infantry grenadier's giberne made entirely of bleached buffalo leather, consisting of the pocket closed by 2 buffalo buttons, a topstitched patelette embroidered with a large grenade in silver thread framed by a garland of laurel leaves embroidered in green silk thread, and silver silk threads, overstitched banderole closed by a brass buckle with a single barb for length adjustment, overstitched and lined cross-strap for the bayonet socket. Late 17th - early 18th century. ABE This "gibecière" as it was known at the time was later whitened, the model appearing around 1687 (cit. M. Pétard) and remaining in use until around 1750. As royal regiments bear the great arms of France on the patelette, this is undoubtedly a provincial levy regiment. Its small size suggests it may have been worn by a junior officer.
