An illustrated folio from a provincial Shahnama: possibly Isfandiyar dispatches Kuhram and Andariman Safavid Iran, 17th century Opaque pigments heightened with gold and black ink on paper, a mounted knight releases arrows onto hung prisoners in a plain covered with flowers in full bloom, courtiers and knights watching the scene unfolding from hill tops, four columns of nasta'liq script between double black rules filled in gold above and below, the reverse with 19ll. of similar script similarly laid out, mounted, framed and glazed, folio 29.5 x 18.5cm.
