Property from an Important Private Collection A group of five book covers, Safavid Iran, 16th-17th century each a single cover ; four of leather, tooled with central lobed medallions containing swaying or scrolling foliate tendrils highlighted in gilt, rising and hanging palmettes above and below, three with the corners tooled in similar decoration, the fourth with plain corners, their reverse either plain or decorated similarly, the smaller with four older collection inventory labels ; one papier-mache with impressed similar decoration, with polychrome tendrils, the reverse with light pink paper, aubergine coloured spine attached ; together with two fragmentary covers and other fragments, possibly associated 30 x 17.5cm., 28.5 x 19cm., 25.7 x 17.4cm., 22.7 x 14.6cm., 20.9 x 13.3cm.
