Lothar Malskat (1912 Königsberg/East Prussia - 1988 Wulfsdorf near Lübeck) North German landscape with cottage garden in front of old thatched-roof houses Expressionist landscape painted by Malskat in the tradition of Emil Nolde with partly relief-like impasto application of paint, in which he contrasted an intensely luminous coloring with black areas. Malskat received his artistic training at the art academy in Königsberg. He gained fame after 1945 through the forgery scandal surrounding his frescoes painted in the Gothic style in Schleswig Cathedral (1937/38) and in St. Mary's Church in Lübeck (1948-1951), as well as through forgeries of artworks by prominent artists such as Barlach, Chagall, Kokoschka, Picasso, Liebermann, Rembrandt, Rousseau, Utrillo and others.
