Rudolf Riester (1904 Waldkirch - 1999 Freiburg im Breisgau) Portrait of a young woman Late Impressionist, half-length portrait of a seated woman with her gaze turned towards the viewer. Riester studied at the Munich Academy under Karl Caspar from 1924 and from 1925 at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst in Berlin under Erich Wolfsfeld and Hans Meid. His classmate was Felix Nussbaum, with whom Riester had a close friendship. In 1934, Riester moved to the academy in Berlin to study with Alexander Kanoldt. The Bremen patron and art collector Ludwig Roselius became Riester's patron in 1935. In 1936, he was awarded the prestigious Villa Romana Prize. In 1943, Riester's Berlin studio was destroyed during the war, along with a large part of his early work. Pastel/paper, old mounting on wooden panel. R. o. sign. and dat. 1937. 92 cm x 67 cm. Frame. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist at the end of the 1930s, since then in succession in Berlin and North German family ownership. Pastel on paper, laid down on panel.
