Franz Heckendorf (1888 Berlin - 1962 Munich) Adriatic coast with a view of the sea at blue hour A landscape painted in Heckendorf's typical expressive and dynamic style, which is characterized by its direct, two-dimensional rendering, contrasts of light and dark and effectively luminous accents of colour. Heckendorf exhibited regularly at the Berlin Secession from 1909 and was a member of its jury from 1916 to 1918. During the Weimar Republic, Heckendorf was one of the most convincing and prominent Expressionists alongside the "Brücke" artists. During the "Third Reich", Heckendorf was ostracized and his paintings were considered "degenerate art" from 1937; from 1943 to 1945, the resistant artist was imprisoned for helping Jews to escape. After the war, Heckendorf first worked at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and then in Salzburg before moving to Munich in 1950. Watercolor a. gouache over pencil/paper.
