Description

Paul Kother (1878 Leipzig - 1963 Weimar) Four bathers by a lake The influence of Paul Cézanne, the "Brücke" painters Max Pechstein, Erich Heckel and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner as well as his friend and brother-in-law Otto Mueller is hardly more evident than in these expressionist depictions of bathing female nudes. In 1912/13, Kother had his first successful solo and joint exhibitions with Pechstein and Beckmann. In 1914, Kother moved from Dresden to the art metropolis of Berlin, where Herwarth Walden showed him together with Pechstein and Lyonel Feininger in his "Sturm" gallery in 1916. In 1921, the Moeller Gallery dedicated a solo exhibition to him. During the National Socialist era, Kother was also one of the ostracized modern artists. Pastel/paper. Label with estate stamp and Wvz no. on verso. P 47. 62.5 cm x 85 cm (mat opening). Frame. General reference: Ralf F. Hartmann (ed.): "Paul Kother 1878-1963 (...)", book accompanying the retrospective in Berlin, Worms and Bremen 2019/20. Provenance: from the estate of the artist. Pastel on paper.
