Duchess Agnes of Saxony-Altenburg (1824 Dessau - 1897 Hummelshain) Portrait of her mother Duchess Friederike of Saxony-Anhalt née Princess of Prussia Detailed portrait of the Duchess sitting in an armchair in a dark red velvet dress and ermine coat, adorned with pearl necklaces, on her head a red velvet hat with a white ostrich feather; next to her a bowl with flowers, in the background a curtain and a view of a hall. Oil on canvas; l. and ligature monogram "HA" with ducal crown and date 1890. Verso an old label with handwritten inscription and date (partly with abbreviations): "This painting of Duchess Friederike von Anhalt née Princess of Prussia copied by her daughter Duchess Agnes von Sachsen-Altenburg née Princess of Anhalt after an original painting by Professor Krüger from Berlin (/) 1891". 103 cm x 76 cm. Original sturdy frame with crown. Krüger's painting from 1849 existed in three versions in the Royal Palace in Berlin, in Dessau Palace and in the possession of the Duke of Cumberland in Vienna (see Margarete Cohn "Franz Krüger. Life and Works", Diss. Breslau 1909, p. 61, nos. 2-4). Friederike of Saxony-Anhalt (1796 - 1850) was a daughter of Prince Friedrich Ludwig Karl of Prussia, since 1818 wife of Duke Leopold IV of Anhalt; her daughter Agnes married Hereditary Prince Ernst of Saxony-Altenburg in 1853.
