Description

Christian Morgenstern (1805 Hamburg - 1867 Munich) Over the rooftops of Munich Atmospheric view over Munich's city center from the roofs of the Schrannenhalle at the Viktualienmarkt to the silhouette of the Frauenkirche, which is delicately silhouetted in the light mist of the autumnal morning sky. A veduta painted in pastel tones and early Impressionist lighting by the Hamburg-born painter, who first completed an apprenticeship in the graphic workshop of the Suhr brothers and then went on extensive study trips throughout Germany, Russia and the Baltic states. In 1830, the landscape painter settled in Munich, but continued to travel extensively to northern Germany, Austria, Italy and Alsace. He found his motifs primarily on his numerous journeys, painted them directly in front of nature and quickly became an award-winning, important representative of Munich open-air painting from the first half of the 19th century; oil/paper, mounted on wood panel. L. and inscribed "Herbst. Morgendl..." (?), monogr. and dat. Verso inscribed and dated by another hand; 23.5 cm x 42.5 cm. Frame. Oil on paper, laid down on wooden panel. Indistinctly inscribed, monogrammed and dated 1865. Inscribed by foreign hand on the reverse.
