Description

Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (1813 Bremen - 1886 Berlin) At the sickbed In a simple interior, a young, deeply worried mother sits at the cradle of her pale, apparently sick infant, holding her arm protectively around a small child. A small bottle of medicine can be seen in the background next to a glass with a small spoon. A touching, narrative depiction of great depth of mood, which stands out due to the sensitive rendering of the mother and children as well as subtly nuanced light and color values. Johann Georg Meyer, who named himself after the city of Bremen where he was born, studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art from 1833 to 1841 and had a studio in Düsseldorf until 1851. He then moved to Berlin, where he was appointed professor at the art academy in 1854. As one of the most talented and successful genre painters of his time, Meyer von Bremen specialized in idealized, contemplative, homely, idyllic family scenes as well as sensitive, mostly small-format depictions of children's lives. Watercolor/paper, mounted on wooden panel with gold border. R. and presumably signature remnants. Old paper label with inscription and ownership note on the reverse. Motif 54.5 cm x 46.5 cm. Panel 62 cm x 48.4 cm. Frame. Watercolour on paper, mounted with gold stripes on wooden panel. Presumably remains of a signature. Different inscriptions on an old label on the reverse.
