Martin van Meytens (1695 Stockholm - 1770 Vienna) Circumference Bust portrait of Emperor Charles VI. Representative, courtly portrait of the Habsburg (1695 - 1740), father of Empress Maria Theresa. In 1711 he was anointed Holy Roman Emperor as Charles VI, he was also Archduke of Austria, sovereign of the other Habsburg hereditary lands, including as Charles III King of Hungary and Croatia and as Charles II King of Bohemia. He wears a long allonge wig and a dark Spanish coat, his hat is decorated with silver-green ostrich feathers and a magnificent agraffe with precious stones. Beneath the jabot made of the finest French lace, the golden chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the highest decoration of the Habsburgs, is clearly visible. Martin van Meytens himself, as Imperial Chamber Painter, and his workshop in Vienna created numerous portraits of the emperor, which served not only to decorate and represent palaces and important buildings in his great empire, but also as gifts from the state.
