Description

Outstanding Brunswick Baroque plank cabinet in walnut and walnut burl, veneered and inlaid with finely etched pewter and ivory. Straight, highly rectangular body on a wide, bulging frame base with corresponding pilaster plinth and cranked horizontal cornice as well as pressed baluster feet. Large bastion panels on the sides. Two large doors in the articulated front with correspondingly elaborately profiled panels, flanked by wide pilasters with Corinthian capitals carved in relief. In the center, large medallions with figural pewter inlays in the form of Flora and Minerva, among others, under canopies with pairs of doves. Full-area veneer fields and reserves bordered by band inlays on the pilasters with elaborately intertwined bands and foliate scrolls. Broad, partly beaded, widely projecting and cranked profile cornice. H. 251 cm. 250 cm x 90 cm. CITES certificate available. The furniture, which is strictly architectural in its construction and thus follows the pattern of the hall cupboard typical of the North German region, shows its mastery not only in the extremely elaborate fillings, but above all in the finely engraved inlays characteristic of Brunswick. Cf: Kreisel: Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels II, p. 61f. and Andrea Schneider, ill. p. 75. Provenance: from the liquidation of an important North German private collection. A large Brunswick walnut veneered Baroque cabinet with marquetry of pewter and ivory. CITES included. Brunswick. Circa 1730.
