Signed Louis XV commode by Jacques Dubois rosewood and kingwood, veneered and inlaid with various, partially dyed precious woods. Curved body on three sides, flanked by wide corner pilaster strips, merging into tapered, flared legs. Two wide drawers sans traverse in the articulated front. Wide framed, mirrored veneer panels with generous floral inlays and birds, bordered by gilt bronze rocailles in relief. Stamp sign. I.DUBOIS (becomes master 1742) and Parisian jury stamp JME. Corresponding cover plate of dark gray, light gray veined marble. H. 88 cm. 112 cm x 55 cm. Jacques Dubois (1694-1763) was one of the most important Parisian cabinetmakers in the Louis XV period. He mainly produced luxury furniture such as expensive secretaries and chests of drawers for the 'marchands-merciers'. After his death, the workshop was taken over by his son René. Cf.
