Moulding workshop of the Musée du Louvre (1794-1882) Head of Melpomène Plaster H. 82 cm W. 64 cm D. 50 cm Our plaster cast takes the face from the large Roman marble in the Musée du Louvre (Paris), dated around 100 BC. Melpomène is one of the nine Muses of Greek mythology, and singing and tragedy are her prerogatives. Our original has long given its name to a room in the Louvre, designed (among others) by Charles PERCIER (1764-1838) (Louvre inventory no.: RF 30628, Recto).
