Description

CHRISTOFLE-CARDEILHAC & Lino SABATTINI (b. 1925), designer. Como model, created circa 1956-1957 Modernist tea and coffee set comprising four pieces: coffee pot, teapot, sugar bowl and milk jug. Plain silver, handles sheathed in raffia-like fibers. Hallmarks: Minerve; Cardeilhac and goldsmith O.C. for Orfèvrerie Christofle. (Minor wear scratches.) Gross weight: 1655.2 g.; Height. from 7 to 22 cm In the mid-1950s, Lino Sabattini opened a goldsmith's workshop in Milan that quickly attracted the attention of Gio Ponti. Ponti wrote an article about him in Domus magazine, and in 1956 presented his work in Paris at an exhibition devoted to Italian design. Sabatini went on to win international recognition and became design director for Christofle Orfèvrerie (which had bought Cardeilhac in 1951). He breathed new life into the company, founded in 1830, by creating modernist cutlery, shaped pieces and candleholders for the "Formes nouvelles" collection. The Como model is most often produced in silver-plated metal by Christofle for the Gallia collection. This silver edition by Christofle-Cardeilhac is therefore particularly rare. Provenance: - Acquired directly from Christofle on June 12, 1957, according to invoice: "Argent massif 1er titre: une cafetière Sabattini, une théière, un sucrier et un crémier". Bibliography: - Connaissance des Arts, May 1999, n°561 p. 71 for an identical silver model. - AD, September-October 2011 n°103, "Échappée belle en ville" by Esther Henwood, for an identical silver model from the Yves Gastou gallery. - Anne Bony, Les Années 50, Paris, 1982, p. 355 for an identical model in silver-plated metal.
