Description

Sauce boat with "Charlottenburg Service" decoration from the estate of Wilhelm II, German Emperor and King of Prussia Curved navette shape with double spout. "Neuglatt" decoration in relief. The narrow sides depict a blossoming rosebush with an overturned basket of flowers on a meadow. The long sides with butterfly decoration and floral border. Polychrome painting with gold staffage and gold toothed edge. Decorative painter's mark for Paul Rogge (active since 1887). Sceptre, painting and crowned owner's mark "WR" with date 1891 in purple. H. 7,5 cm. L. 23.5 cm. The dinner service was originally made in 1772 for Frederick the Great for Charlottenburg Palace. In the course of the 19th century, pieces of the so-called "Charlottenburg Service" were added (cf. Stadtmuseum Berlin, inv. no. VI 20473), some with the ligatured owner's mark of King Frederick William IV. Cf. Köllmann/Jarchow, vol. 2, fig. 279.
