André Vincent Becquerel (1893 Saint-André-Farivillers - 1981 Paris) Old couple from Normandy Chryselephantine figure group. Bronze, patinated in various shades; carved ivory. Signed; stone base. Cast probably by Edmond Etling, Paris. Fully sculpted, expressively characterizing depiction of a couple strolling together, probably created around 1920; the gentleman with clogs, top hat and umbrella, the woman in a floor-length skirt, long lined cloak and hood. Becquerel studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Hector Lemaire and Prosper Lecourtier. He exhibited his bronzes and chryselephantine figures, mostly executed by Edmond Etling and Max Le Verrier and often combined with ivory, at the Salon from 1914 onwards. Overall h. 37 cm.
