Description
Exquisite Louis Philippe tabatiere Colorless glass or rock crystal with gilded silver and gold mounting. Oval shape with straight walls and flat hinged glass lid. Delicate gold mounting with surrounding floral band in relief, filigree leaf wreath and dotted decorative lines. Marked, Parisian guarantee stamp (1819-1838), so-called Recense stamp 1838 and further mark "16. (?)" and indistinct master's mark. H. 1.8 cm. 7 cm x 5 cm. There is a similar tabatiere made of finely cut rock crystal with gold mounting in the Louvre in Paris, inv. no. OA 7716. Cf. Rosenberg, vol. IV, nos. 5897, 6594 and 6606; Claire Le Corbeiller: "Alte Tabakdosen aus Europa und Amerika", Munich, 1966, fig. 484 (rock crystal body).
