First edition of this sparkling speech delivered by Jean Cocteau in Belgium while representing the Académie française, at the solemn session of September 29, 1962 at the Académie royale de langue et de littérature française, during which the centenary of Maeterlinck's birth was celebrated in the presence of Queen Fabiola. Limited edition of 51 numbered copies; no. 3 of the first 10 copies on Mazarin blue chiffon vellum.

"On June 8, 1929, the Union pour la Vérité in Paris organized a public debate on the Conquerors. Speakers included MM. Brunswick, Julien Benda, Gabriel Marcel, Emmanuel Berl, Pierre Hamp, Alfred Fabre-Luce, Jean Guéhenno and André Malraux. Also present: André Gide, Roger Martin du Gard, André Chamson. André Malraux began by setting the scene for the controversy. It is this speech that we are publishing."
