Description

Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin KPM

Porcelain painting with view of Prince Albrecht Palace Porcelain, colored overglaze decoration. Very finely painted veduta of the garden side with uniformed horseman in the foreground. Blind-stamped eagle mark, 9 and S. H 15, W 18 cm. Framed wooden frame H 24.8, W 27.7 cm. Berlin, KPM, the decoration probably house painting, c. 1840, after a lithograph by Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Loeillot de Mars. The palace, built between 1737 and 1739, was located on Wilhelmstrasse and had the house number 102. It was occupied by the Prussian Prince Albrecht (1809 - 1872) in 1830, who immediately had it redesigned by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The porcelain painting shows the state after Schinkel's intervention; the garden design with its lush flower beds and the overgrown arbors above the loggias are particularly typical. During an air raid in November 1944, the building was so badly damaged that it remained in ruins until 1949, when the Berlin Senate decided to demolish it. Provenance North German private collection.
