Of a circular form with a raised rim originally gilded (some of the gilding is still retained), this is a very finely engraved Persian dhal shield featuring scenes from the 'Shahnameh'. There are four engraved and gilt domes located symmetrically within the gilt central part of the shield. The engraved motifs feature mounted riders, battle scenes and images of hunting warriors. The verso shows a patch, a repair that is not visible from the front. Iran, early 19th century. Dimensions: L: 16 1/4 in., (41.3 cm.) Very good.
