Description

Cleo Hartwig (1907-1988), American school. Standing female figure. Cast stone. Signed on the back of the base: C. HARTWIG. Circa 1952. H. 60 W.13 D.9 cm. Hartwig belongs to the line of "direct carvers", a group that includes both José de Creeft, with whom she studied, and Vincent Glinsky, her husband. With this technique, the artist sculpts directly into the materials without any intermediate steps. The design and execution of the work are influenced by the density, veining, color, texture and shape of the support. After a stay in Paris and Mexico, primitivism and minimalism became constant sources of inspiration. Hartwig's sculpture became pure, reduced to the essential, a process illustrated by the present figure, whose elegant purity and slender, elongated form are serene, timeless and universal.
