"Francisco de QUEVEDO - Pablo de Ségovie Published by Edouard Pelletan in Paris and Daniel Vierge in Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1902 - An exceptionally well-bound copy by René Kieffer in full olive morocco, entirely mosaiced on the boards and spine with a magnificent composition "aux citrons" with numerous frames of gilded fillets and geometric shapes of oriental inspiration. 4-nerved spine decorated with the same mosaic composition in the central box. Borders in the same morocco with mosaic flowers at the corners and framed with gilded fillets, marbled paper and endpapers lined with fabric echoing the motifs on the binding boards. Gilt edges. A very fine edition of this Spanish picaresque tale translated by J.H. Rosny and illustrated with 120 drawings by Daniel Vierge, one of his finest works. Copy with two states of all the illustrations, all on Japon, frontispiece portrait of the author also in two states. One of 40 numbered first copies on Japon des manufactures impériales paper, enriched with three original sketches bound at the head and signed by Daniel Vierge. A suite of 4 engravings depicting characters from the novel, all in 3 states, on China paper. EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE in magnificent condition, testifying to the formidable craftsmanship of bookbinder René Kieffer, whose output, though vast and sometimes uneven, is among the most impressive of the period.
